Our Assessment: The Ithaca NID was one of the classic American doubles. It was introduced in 1925 to replace the Flues model and remained the mainstay of the Ithaca line until they discontinued all double gun production in 1948. It had an improved Ithaca boxlock action that featured a rotary bolt locking system and a strengthened frame, with fluid steel barrels suitable for modern shells but not steel shot. This is a 12 Gauge Grade 4E model that features deluxe checkered wood with pistol grip and beavertail forend. The forend latch, the rear of the forend piece, the receiver, trigger guard and lever are all elaborately factory engraved. The shotgun has a ventilated rib on the barrels with bone beads at mid-rib and at the muzzle, and with a single selective trigger. At some point, the 32” barrels were fitted for Briley thinwall choke tubes, the recoil pad was replaced with a LimbSaver and the original grip cap with the gold initial of the original owner was replaced with a smooth black hard rubber cap. This shotgun is in about Excellent condition with 97% of its finish remaining. It shows a few tiny marks in the barrel, with light marks on the receiver and trigger guard. The wood also shows only a few marks. The barrels are bright with no erosion. The shotgun comes in a fitted leather covered case with a total of six choke tubes, a choke tube wrench, reprints of vintage Ithaca catalogs and a letter from the Ithaca historian stating that this shotgun was shipped in 1928 in Grade 4E. This is a very nice find for the collector of American double barrel shotguns. We don’t often see Ithaca shotguns of this high grade and in such nice condition.
