Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “-WINCHESTER MODEL 70 XTR 25-06 REM.- / -MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL-”. The top of the barrel is marked with two ovalled “WP” proofs. The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER”. The right side of the receiver at the chamber is marked “G1494082”. The underside of the bolt body is etched “082”.

Barrel Length: 24″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade that is dovetailed into a serrated ramped riser that is screwed to the barrel, it has a protective hood. The rear sight has been removed, its mounting hole has been filled with a fill-screw. The left-rear of the receiver has a pair of drilled, tapped, and filled holes for mounting a receiver sight (none present). The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with two-piece Weaver bases and rings holding a Leupold Vari-X IIc 2-7x scope with duplex reticle. The scope shows minor handling wear and the glass is clear.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut with a capped forend and pistol grip, nosecap, monte-carlo comb with a cheekpiece, recoil lug, checkered black plastic Winchester buttplate, and sling studs front and rear. The stock has only a few scattered minor marks, no notable damage. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has some light wear around the edges. Overall, the stock is in Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: The finish appears Original, the dual proofs may indicate return to the Winchester factory at some time.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are only light handling marks and minor operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. This rifle employs a push feed bolt. The safety is mounted at the back of the bolt on the right side. It has three positions. Pushed all the way forwards, the safety is off and ready to fire. In the middle position, the safety blocks the trigger, but allows the bolt to be opened for loading and unloading. In the rear position, the safety blocks the trigger and the bolt. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is a leather sling and the previously described scope.

Our Assessment: This is a Winchester Model 70 XTR Sporter rifle chambered in .25-06 Remington produced in 1979. It has a 24” barrel, jeweled bolt with a knurled knob, and a checkered walnut stock. The rifle is in Excellent condition with 98% of its metal finish remaining, a great bore, and strong mechanics. This is a classic American rifle in a great hunting caliber.
