Action Type: 6-Shot, Single and Double Action Revolver with Swing-Out Fluted Cylinder

Markings: The right side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON” and the left is marked “.44 MAGNUM”. The yoke cut is marked with the serial number and model number. The yoke and sides of the grip frame are marked with inspection marks. The sideplate of the frame is marked with the monogram logo. The right side of the frame, below the cylinder, is marked with the four-line marcas registradas address. The rear of the cylinder is marked “V” and the ejector rod recess is marked “S”.

Barrel Length: 3” Custom Cut.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramped blade with an orange insert is set on a serrated elevated base that is integral to the rib, which is serrated for glare reduction. The rear sight is an S&W flat top square notched leaf with a white outline, it is micrometer click adjustable for windage and elevation.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a one-piece checkered black rubber Pachmayr Compac grip. The grips have torn down the seam along the rear. There are scattered light handling marks. The checkering is strong with minimal wear. Overall, the grips are in Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Stainless Steel

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. There is stubborn lead fouling at the forcing cone.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. The barrel has been cut. The grip frame has been converted to a round butt. The hammer has been reprofiled into a tear drop hammer. There are some scattered draglines. There are some scattered little scuffs and rubs, a couple have caused smooth spots. There are a few little nicks and hairline scratches. There is a thin turn line on the cylinder. There are a couple of faint marks on the trigger guard. There is light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp to lightly used. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lockup produces light side-to-side movement. The double-action is smooth and the single action is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The 629 has been made in a variety of configurations since 1979 filling just about any role that could be asked of a .44 Magnum revolver. This example is the M629-1 which has since been customized after leaving the factory. The barrel has been cut, the hammer has been reprofiled into a tear drop hammer, and the grip frame has been converted into a round butt. The .44 Magnum is a stout round and will be good protection against just about anything you’ll encounter in North America, no matter if it walks on four legs or two. The gun is in Fine condition with a few scattered light marks, a great bore, and strong mechanics.
