Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”, the right side is marked “44 MAGNUM”. The yoke cut is marked with the model and serial numbers. The butt of the grip frame is marked with the serial number. The yoke and sides of the grip frame have inspection marks. The left side of the frame is marked with the S&W monogram logo. The right side of the frame is marked with the four-line marcas registradas address. The ejector rod recess is marked “S”.

Barrel Length: The barrel is 3″. It has Mag-Na-Porting, a custom top port, and has been recrowned.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramped blade with a translucent pink insert integral to a ramped base which is integral to the rib. The rear sight is a square notched white outlined leaf in a click base that is adjustable for windage and elevation screwed to the top strap. The topstrap is drilled and tapped under the rear sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The aftermarket grips are smooth wood with finger grooves. The grips enclose the grip frame. There are a few light marks from handling and storage scattered over the grips. There are some draglines and a couple minor compressions, mostly just on the bottom faces. Overall, the grips are in about Fine Plus condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore but there is stubborn lead fouling.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are a few little nicks and minor scratches scattered over the metal. There are some scattered little scuffs, rubs, and draglines, some have caused smooth spots. There is scattered light handling wear. The cylinder also has a light turn line. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Very Good-Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The double-action trigger is smooth and the single action is crisp. The cylinder lockup has some minor side-to-side play on the chambers. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The 629 has been made in a variety of configurations since 1979 filling just about any role that could be asked of a .44 Magnum revolver. This example is the 629-4 with a 3″ barrel, aftermarket wood grips, and a stainless finish. The .44 Magnum is a stout round and will be good protection against just about anything you’ll encounter in North America, no matter if it walks on four legs or two. This one has been recrowned and Mag-Na-Ported, with the potent .44 Mag and short barrel length you will be glad too. The gun is in Very good-Fine condition with a few scattered light marks, a great bore, and strong mechanics.
