Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number “197-30202”, Ruger’s two-line safety warning message, the Ruger phoenix logo and “STRUM, RUGER & CO. INC. / SOUTHPORT, CONN. U.S.A.”. The front of the gas block is marked “ASI”. The rear of the receiver is marked “RUGER® / RANCH RIFLE / CAL. .223”.
Barrel Length: The barrel proper is 21”. The length including the muzzle break is 23”. The muzzle break is threaded on and well blended to the barrel.
Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for an iron front sight. The rear sight is a flip-up aperture insert on a leaf sight dovetailed to the top rear of the receiver and is adjustable for elevation and windage. The receiver has integrated bases that have Ruger 1” rings holding a Weaver Classic V-24 6-24x42mm scope with Mil-Dot reticle. The scope body has some minor dings and scuffs in the finish. The scope glass needs a good cleaning.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece wood featuring a semi-pistol grip, straight comb and ventilated black rubber recoil pad. There are light scratches, nicks and scuffs scattered throughout the stock. Notably, there are moderate scratches on the right side below the receiver and on the buttstock. The left side has a couple of patches of moderate scuffing, one of which has gone through the wood finish. The handguard has been replaced with a black synthetic aftermarket piece. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 3/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad and 12 1/2” to the wood. The buttpad just has some light scuffs at the toe. The stock is in Very Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue & Stainless
Finish Originality: Original to the parts, the barrel, handguard and gas block are not original to the rifle, the trigger assembly has been modified.
Bore Condition: The bore is semi bright and the rifling is deep. There is fouling and light intermittent erosion in the grooves. The fouling should clean up some.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its metal finish. There are areas of wear and thinning on the receiver on the leading edges and operational wear around the action. There are light scratches and nicks along the barrel. The original trigger has been replaced with a Canjar trigger. The screw heads are well defined. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The gas block has been replaced with an aftermarket ASI gas block. The trigger has been modified with an overtravel stop and a modification to stop it close to reset. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with a Weaver Classic V-24 6-24x42mm scope as described above and one (1) 10-round magazine with intact feed lips and strong follower spring.
Our Assessment: This is a nice looking rifle that has been modified to help operator performance and will come in handy for shooting paper or small game that is on the move. This rifle is ideal for the farm or ranch, the deep woods, or personal defense. The heavy barrel, scope and trigger upgrades make this Mini 14 a favorite in any application where precision and quick follow-up shots are priorities.
