Sights / Optics: The front sight is a tall blade that is dovetailed to a serrated riser and screwed into the barrel. The blade is a replacement. The riser is slotted for a hood that is not present. The rear sight has been removed leaving an empty dovetail. There is a fully adjustable Williams peep aperture sight equipped at the rear of the receiver. There is another set of drilled, tapped, and filled holes at the front of the receiver.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece gray laminate checkered wood with a capped pistol grip, fluted straight comb, sling stud in the forend cap, and a soft rubber weave-textured Decelerator buttpad. A sling stud is missing from the belly, leaving an empty tapped hole. The wood shows some scattered light wear in the form of faint draglines and shallow compressions. There are a few nicks on the grip cap. There are no chips or cracks. The checkering shows handling wear yet remains sharp. The LOP measures 13 5/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the rubber buttpad. The buttpad shows light wear around the edges and remains soft. The stocks rate in about Fine-Plus overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore but there is some light fouling present. The bore has an M.E. of 1.5.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are scattered light scratches on the sides of the receiver. There are also some less frequently scattered light marks throughout the barrel. There are spots of fouling on the right side of the receiver. There is standard operational wear. The markings are clear. The screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle rates in about Good condition. (See Mechanics)

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. However, when the action is opened fully, upon closing the action the lever seems to get hung up on something making it rather difficult to close the action. This will need to be corrected by a competent gunsmith before firing. The safety lever is present. There is also a push safety on the receiver that blocks the hammer from hitting the pin. The lever extends slightly past ninety degrees in the open position. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: The Marlin Model 336 is a lever-action rifle and carbine made by Marlin Firearms. Since its introduction in 1948, it has been offered in a number of different calibers and barrel lengths, but is commonly chambered in .30-30 Winchester or .35 Remington, using a 20- or 24-inch barrel. Currently, the model with a 24-inch barrel is only available in .30-30 Winchester. This is a beautiful stainless steel Marlin 336XLR sporting a gray laminate stock and a 24” barrel. It is chambered in the ever popular .30-30 Winchester, the caliber said to have taken more deer in North America than any other caliber. Once the issue with the lever is resolved, this rifle will make a solid hunting rifle that will last for years to come. Please see our photos and good luck!
