Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER / -TRADE MARK-”. The left of the barrel is marked “-WINCHESTER MODEL 70 6.5 X 55MM / -MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CT. USA-“. the right side of the barrel is marked “-CLASSIC FEATHERWEIGHT-“. The right side of the receiver is marked with the serial number. The top of the barrel is marked with the “WP” proof. The bolt is hand-marked with the last four digits of the serial number.

Sights / Optics: The top of the receiver is installed with a pair of bases and rings.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with a black capped pistol grip, straight comb, Schnabel tipped forend, single recoil lug, solid rubber Winchester buttpad, and sling studs front and rear. The most noticeable wear is on the left side of the forend on the checkering and is a mar into the wood. There are a few faint compressions and light handling marks. The majority of the checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad. The pad shows only minor wear. Overall, the stock is in about Fine Plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. There is a little patch of finish loss on the top of the barrel at the muzzle and a couple of little nicks on the left side at the muzzle. There are a couple of little marks on the trigger guard. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks and standard operational wear. The screws are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a three-position bolt mounted safety. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 is an iconic American sporting rifle that has been a staple of hunters for more than 80 years; reliable, robust, and accurate, it is one of the benchmarks by which all bolt action rifles are measured. This example is the Classic Featherweight variant, notable for all the ways weight was removed from the rifle. Though it remained the standard length, the forend was extensively trimmed down, with wood being removed as much as possible from the interior, the barrel boss was done away with, the barrel is thinner and shorter, no iron sights… it goes on! The Featherweight is lighter in-hand than one would expect, and chambered in the 6.5×55 Swedish cartridge, any would-be shooter would do well to begin a collection with this rifle.
