Our Assessment: From Savage’s website: “When you have to burn boot leather between stands, choose the 25 Lightweight Varminter. It weighs just 8.25 pounds yet is durable and extremely accurate, thanks to a button-rifled, 24-inch, medium-contour carbon steel barrel. It features user-adjustable AccuTrigger™ technology, a striking wood laminate stock and a detachable box magazine.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. Originally developed by P.O. Ackley by necking down a .22 Hornet and altering the shoulder, the .17 Hornet is now offered by Hornady with slight dimensional changes from Ackley’s design. Capable of pushing a 20 grain projectile at more than 3,500 fps, this is a thoroughbred varmint cartridge that will give you a very flat trajectory allowing for precision over a longer range than rimfire cartridges could manage. If you’re looking to take care of some groundhogs or ground squirrels, this is the rifle to bid on. Please see our photos and good luck!
