Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked -“WINCHESTER / PROOF STEEL”, “-MODEL 70-“, “WINCHESTER / -TRADE MARK-“, “30 GOV’T ’06” and at the rear with an ovalled “WP” proof, found again on the left of the receiver’s chamber ring. The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER / -TRADE MARK-”. The right side of the receiver’s chamber ring is marked “9036”. The bottom of the bolt body is hand-scribed “9036”. The right side of the barrel is marked “MADE IN U.S.A. WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. / NEW HAVEN, CONN. — PATENTED”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a globe sight with a circular aperture insert, it is attached to a fitting that is detailed into a stippled ramped base that is fixed to the barrel. The rear of the barrel has two empty drilled and tapped holes. The rear sight is a Redfield Olympic aperture peep sight screwed to the left side of the receiver. The chamber ring has a pair of empty drilled and tapped holes.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece smooth walnut with a pistol grip, beavertail forend with inlaid accessory rail, checkered metal buttplate, and a straight comb that has been installed with a rubber monte carlo cheekpiece. The left side of the stock has notches for use with aperture sights at the rear of the receiver. There are some scattered compressions, draglines, and a few little marks through the finish. There is a small hairline crack on the top of the wrist at the tang. There is a repaired hairline crack on the comb at the rear. The LOP measures 12 3/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has some light patina, spots of faint oxidation, and finish loss on the edges. Overall, the stock is in about Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its current metal finish. There is some thinning on the edges. There are some scratches on the receiver, most noticeable on the left side of the receiver. There are some scattered little scuffs on the receiver which have thinned the finish. There are some spots of dark discoloration from previous oxidation on the bolt knob. There are scuffs, scratches and areas of patina & oxidation on the bottom meta. There is heavier finish loss on the trigger guard. There are some scattered little nicks and light scratches on the barrel, the most noticeable are on the left side towards the front. There are some scattered scuffs on the barrel which have thinned the finish, some have taken on discoloration. There is some light erosion on the sides of the barrel at the muzzle. There is light handling and operational wear. The markings are clear. The screwheads are sharp to lightly worn. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the top-rear rear of the bolt. Pulled to the OFF, pushed to the front the safety is ON, locking both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Target Rifle chambered for the classic .30-06 cartridge and made in 1937, the 2nd year of production. The rifle has some wear and light damage to the stock, but retains its original finish and still looks good. It has strong mechanics and a nice bore. Ammunition for this rifle is (usually) readily available in a variety of loadings and makes for a wonderful target rifle.
