Sights/Optics: There is no provision for iron sights on this rifle. The receiver rib is notched for the attached Ruger rings that have mounted in them a Nikon 3-9x scope with a duplex reticle. The scope body has a few light marks and drag lines along the top, but the glass is fairly clear and overall, the scope rates in Fine condition.

Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered wood with capped pistol grip, fluted straight comb, and orange rubber Ruger buttpad. There is a sling stud on the belly of the buttstock and one on the underside of the forend. There are scattered spots where the checkering is lightly marred, there are a few minor dings on the comb, and a few light dings surrounding the magazine floor plate. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP is 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The buttpad has some minor staining/discoloration with some scuff wear at the heel and toe, but is still supple. Overall, the stock is in Fine-plus condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion, but stubborn fouling persists throughout.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are light handling marks and just a few scattered minor nicks on the metal. The screws have light tool marks and strong slots, and all markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in Fine-plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork and Accessories: The Nikon scope described above.

Our Assessment: The Ruger M77 is a robust bolt-action rifle designed in 1968 by L. James Sullivan during his short three-years with Ruger. Intended originally as a modernized Mauser 98, it featured simplified ejector updates and a newly designed safety system. This rifle is quite late-era, dates back only to 2009, well-after all major M77 re-tools. This M77 is a Sporter version chambered in the less-common .256 Bob. With light bullets the .257 produces very little recoil and has a fairly flat trajectory which is great for varmint hunting. With heavier bullets it produces more substantial recoil and is capable of taking down most medium sized American game. In Fine-plus condition, this rifle is utterly free of significant wear. We’ll say simply, do not hesitate to add this M77 Hawkeye to your collection. Good luck and happy bidding!
