Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER / PROOF STEEL” – “MODEL 61”-“WINCHESTER / TRADEMARK”-22 S.L. OR L.R.” The right side of the barrel is marked “MADE IN U.S.A. WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO / NEW HAVEN. CONN.-U.S.A. PAT. NO. 1994564”. The underside of the barrel and trigger guard are marked “46727”. The top of the barrel and top of the receiver are marked with an ovaled “WP” proof.

Barrel Length: 24” Round with Tubular Magazine

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a silver beaded blade dovetail set to the barrel. The rear sight is a “U” notched elevator leaf dovetailed to the barrel adjustable for elevation.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece walnut stocks have a pistol grip and shotgun style buttplate. The forend is grooved and the butt stock is smooth. The stocks exhibit relatively few signs of use for their age and the fit to the gun is tight. Deep compression marks are visible on the right side of the butt at the receiver, at the bottom edge of the grip and on the side of the butt. It appears that the stocks have been refinished. The LOP measures 13 ¼” from the front of the trigger to the back of the blue checkered steel shotgun style butt plate., which exhibits surface thinning and is in Very Good condition. The stocks rates in about Very Good overall condition as refinished.

Finish Originality: All Original

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is present. There is no erosion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows scattered marks in the finish with pinprick erosion and surface loss visible at the muzzle. A patch of surface erosion is present on the right side of the receiver. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. All Model 61 are takedown models. We have not fired this rifle.

Our Assessment: Winchester manufactured around 350,000 Model 61 .22 caliber slide action rifles between 1932 and 1963. Slide action rifles are just plain fun to shoot. The Model 61 is in Very Good condition and is chambered in .22 Short, Long and Long Rifle, making it a versatile casual range rifle for grownups and kids alike.
