Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are minor handling marks and thinning of the finish, primarily unders the barrel. The pistol is ornately engraved over most of the frame, cylinder and barrel. There is some discoloration in the grip straps which appears to be from the grips’ finish. Please see our photos. The screw heads are well defined and only have a few scratches. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in Fine to Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder locks up with barely perceptible play on each chamber. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes in a nice wooden box with brass hinges. The box has some scuffing and dings from storage wear.  The bottom of the box has a fabric lining to prevent sliding on a smooth surface.  The inside of the box is lined with a soft green fabric and is compartmentalized.  A small circular container labeled percussion caps is taped shut and in a compartment.  Other compartments hold a powder flask and a brass Colt-style bullet mold.

Our Assessment: This Navy Arms replica of the Remington Model 1858 is a .44 caliber single-action percussion revolver. Remington’s Model 1858 had a feature that made it stand out compared to revolvers that their competitor Colt was manufacturing at the time, a top-strap. The revolver was initially a supplementary issue firearm in the U.S. military, but when the Colt factory burned down in 1864 it replaced the Colt model 1860 Army as the US military’s main sidearm. This ornately engraved pistol and its accessories will make a beautiful decorative piece to any office or study.  Good luck in your bidding!
