Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “O.H.B” which was once “C.H.P” but was overstamped before the gun was sold to the public. The left side is also marked “Remington Wingmaster / 898037V MODEL 870”. The left side of the barrel is marked “12 GA. FOR 2 ¾ OR SHORTER SHELLS” and “CYL. / RLT” next to the receiver. The right side of the barrel is marked “REMINGTON ARMS CO. INC., ILION N.Y. MADE IN U.S.A. / PATENT NO’S 2,645,873 – 2,675,638 OTHERS PENDING” it is also marked with a magnaflux mark, a tool mark, and a proof mark.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is fixed bead. There is no provision for a rear sight. The top of the receiver is serrated for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are oil finished wood with a grooved, serrated forend, pistol grip, straight comb, and a brown ventilated recoil pad. There is a white scuff on the left side of the forearm. There is discoloration throughout the buttstock with notable dark discoloration on the front of the grip from handling. There are some minor dispersed light nicks and draglines. The LOP measures 13 7/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the textured Remington recoil pad, which displays handling and usage wear and has become slightly rigid on the right side. The stocks rate in about Very Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 90% of its metal finish. There are scattered scratches and dings, the most notable being two scratches on the left side of the barrel and several on the left side of the receiver. There is finish loss throughout the magazine tube from operation of the slide. The markings are visible. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Remington 870 Wingmaster is a shotgun everyone should own, it has been issued to militaries and law enforcement agencies, like this one was, and has also been a favorite of sportsmen for decades. This gun has an 18.5” barrel and will serve you well as a home defense shotgun or you can get an aftermarket barrel and take it hunting. There are a number of aftermarket parts available for these guns and there is no shortage of customization options.
