Barrel Length: 24?

Sights/Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed into a checkered ramped base that is screwed into the barrel. The base is grooved for the attached protective hood. The rear sight is an adjustable semi-buckhorn u-notch dovetailed into a ramped base that is fixed to the barrel. Use of the rear sight is obstructed by the attached optic. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped, and filled with two Leupold-style quick-detach bases which have mounted on them a Nikon 3-9×40 scope. The scope body is free of any notable wear or damage, the glass is clear, and overall it rates in Fine-plus condition.

Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered black synthetic composite with capped pistol grip, fluted straight comb, and a ribbed black rubber Limbsaver buttpad. Minor scuffs and drag lines can be seen dotted throughout the stock, most notably on either side below the receiver. The upper left edge has a more notable ding. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14 1/4? from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad and 13 1/4” to the back of the composite. The pad shows only minor wear from handling. Overall, the stock is in Fine-plus condition.

Type of Finish: Stainless

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but minor stubborn fouling is peppered throughout, and concentrated most heavily at the muzzle.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its metal finish. Edges of the receiver have a few minor nicks. The right side of the barrel has a lengthy drag line, and the left side has large concentrations of nicks and small drag lines. There is minor operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the rear of the bolt. Pulled to the rear, the safety is ON, locking both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: The scope as described above.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 70 is an iconic American sporting rifle which has been a staple of hunters for more than 80 years. This example is a Classic Stainless with a 24” barrel and a handsome checkered black composite stock. Efforts were made to set things back to rights when it came to the Model 70 and the classic series saw the return of the lauded control-feed bolt. Well out of the company’s fallow period, this example was produced sometime in the period between 1994-1998. Chambered as it is in the beastly .30-06 Springfield, you’ll have in your collection a dependable, exceedingly well-built rifle. By appearances, this rifle appears to have spent a fair bit of time in the field. Good luck and happy bidding!
