Markings: The left side of the receiver is marked “C.SHARPS ARMS CO. INC. / BIG TIMBER, MONTANA , U.S.A. / 85-143”. The top of the barrel is marked “Old Reliable” in a rectangle, “C.SHARPS ARMS CO. INC. / BIG TIMBER, MONTANA, U.S.A.”, and “CALIBRE .38-55”. The bottom of the barrel is marked “3” and “9R”. The face of the receiver is marked “9 54 R”. The right side of the base of the rear sight is marked “C.SHARPS ARMS CO. INC.”. The top of the forearm is marked “21 / 9 / R” and “85-143”. The back of the forearm is marked “9R / 143”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a silver blade that is slotted in a base and dovetailed to the barrel. There is no provision for a rear sight. The tang sight is a fully adjustable flip-up peep aperture sight.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth wood with a schnabel forearm, straight grip, straight comb, and a checkered steel buttplate. There are a few sparsely scattered draglines and compressions on the left side of the buttstock. There is a small scuff on the left side of the forearm. There are no chips and cracks. The LOP measures 14 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the steel buttplate, which shows little to no wear. The stocks rate in about Fine-Excellent overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are a few scattered faint marks on the barrel. There are a couple tiny nicks on the top right leading edge of the barrel. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine-Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Sharps rifles are a series of large-bore, single-shot, falling-block, breech-loading rifles, beginning with a design by Christian Sharps in 1848. They were renowned for long-range accuracy. This is a New Model 1885 Sporting Rifle manufactured 1992-2008 and chambered for 38-55 WCF.
