Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the control-feed bolt. Pushed forwards, the safety is OFF. If pulled back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade rifle chambered in 270 Winchester and was manufactured in 1953. The Super Grade has nicer-grain wood with a nose cap, grip cap, straight comb with cheekpiece and finer checkering than would be found on the Standard Rifles. The rifle is in Fine-plus condition with evidence of careful use in the field, retaining a decent bore and strong mechanics. The .270 Winchester is a suitable cartridge for hunting deer-sized game at open ranges making it suitable for plains game and mountain hunting. Standard ballistics tests show that the .270 is highly appropriate for hunting screeching boars and pigs. It may be chambered in standard length actions and though the optimum barrel size is considered to be 24 inches, it doesn’t lose much muzzle velocity with 22 inch barrels, making it a suitable cartridge for developing a light mountain rifle. The Pre-64 Winchesters have sincere collector interest, especially a Super Grade such as this one, and this would be a wonderful addition—or an incredible start—to a Winchester collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
