Sights/Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade with a protective hood dovetailed to a textured, ramped base fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a flip-up “U”-notch dovetailed to a boss at the rear of the barrel. The left-rear of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for a receiver sight (none included). The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled with two holes in the chamber ring and one on the bridge. A Redfield optic rail is installed and in a pair of optic rings a Lyman All American 6x scope is installed. The scope has light nicks in several spots with minor thinning on the edges of both bells. The glass is fairly clear, and overall the scope rates in Very Good condition.
Stock Configuration and Condition: The stock is one-piece hand checkered walnut with a pistol grip, Monte Carlo comb with cheek piece, QD sling swivels front and rear, and a checkered steel buttplate. The stock has scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. The right side of the grip has a drag line that runs from the grip into the checkering. There are intermittent minor nicks or compressions on the comb. The checkering is generally well defined. The LOP measures 13 3/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has worn to white at the edges, and has well defined checkering. Overall, the stock is in Very Good-to-Fine condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is very infrequent minor erosion in the bore, along with a bit of minor stubborn fouling peppered about.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The action shows light operational wear. The bolt handle is wearing to white. The receiver has a few very minor nicks on the upper edges. There are a few spots of very light surface oxidation on the bottom of the barrel nearer to the tip. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in Very Good-plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the top-rear rear of the control feed bolt. Pulled to the OFF, pushed to the front the safety is ON, locking both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: The scope as described above.
Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Super Grade Rifle chambered for .220 Swift cartridge and made in 1955, in the post-war salad days. There is really only light wear across the rifle, with the lion’s share of issues being on the stock. It has strong mechanics and a nice bore. Whether you’re looking to add to your Winchester collection or just want a great varmint rifle, this will be a great gun to add to any safe in America. Please see our photos and good luck!
