Markings: The left side of the slide is marked “7,65 COURT 9 COUPS “UNIQUE” / MANUFACTURE D’ARMES DES PYRENEES, HENDAYE”. The right side of the frame is marked with the serial number, “69769” over an eagle and “WaA251” waffenamt. The barrel is marked “989” or “686” and with a eagle. Both grip panels are marked “7.65 m/m / 9 SCHUSS”.

Barrel Length: 3 1/4”

Sights/Optics: The front sight is a rounded blade fixed to the slide. The rear sight is a square notch dovetailed into the top of the slide.

Stock Configuration and Condition: The grips are serrated black hard rubber panels. There are minor nicks along the ridges of the serrations. The nicks on the left side are far more prominent. There are no cracks. Overall, the grips rate in Good-to-Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with well-defined rifling that has very minor wear. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 77% of its metal finish. The slide has scattered minor nicks and a few scuffs, and the serrations have some minor nicks along the edges. The frame and slide have minor thinning on most edges. Screws are lightly-to-moderately tool marked with usable slots. Markings are clear. Overall, this handgun is in Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. Please note, the magazine release and well are heavily tool marked, making removal of the magazine difficult. The slide is tight to the frame. The safety can be used to lock the slide open, which does not lock back on an empty magazine. The barrel can be removed by twisting it clockwise, pulling it out part way, then turning it counter-clockwise. This pistol has a magazine disconnect in addition to the frame mounted safety. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork, and Accessories: A brown leather flap holster and one (1) magazine.

Our Assessment: Manufacture D’Armes de Pyrenees Francaises (MAPF) was formed in 1923 and was noted for the vast number of brand names and pseudonyms under which its Unique family of arms was sold. The Unique brand was also made by a Spanish gun making firm in Eibar Spain (or at least they made parts for Unique pistols sold by MAPF). When the Germans took over France, MAPF was already making Unique Model 16 and 17 pistols. The Germans kept production going on the Model 17’s, renaming it the Kriegsmodell L. This example has strong mechanics, the bore is quite clean, and the markings are clear, making this a fine piece for any serious WWII collector. Good luck and happy bidding!
