Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top of the receiver is marked “AL” (Armee Luxembourg). The left side of the receiver is marked with a Belgian “* / N” proof and with a Belgian proof that resembles an “arrow”. The right side of the receiver, the right side of the top cover, right side of the bolt, and the right side of the bolt carrier are each marked with the serial number. The left side of the receiver is marked “flaming bomb” and “0”. The right side of the receiver is marked “FABRIQUE NATIONALE D’ARMES DE GUERRE-HERSTAL-BELGIQUE”. The top of the gas tube cap is marked “A”. The right side of the stock, below the receiver, is marked with a number that does not match the serial number. The belly of the stock is marked with a “circle containing script letters”.
Barrel Length: Approximately 23 Inches
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a bladed post set between two protective ears. The rear sight is an aperture tangent sight marked from “1-10”.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece hardwood stock has a pistol grip, finger grooves, metal nosecaps, barrel band, two sling loops, and a metal buttplate with hinged door for storage in the butt. The buttplate shows scrapes, scratches, thinning and discoloration from oxidation. The wood shows various scrapes, small scratches and handling marks. Most of the marks are light. The LOP measures 13 1/4 inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The lands are semi bright, the grooves are semi bright, and the rifling is deep. There is no erosion present. The bore shows an M.E. of -2 (negative 2).
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 94% of its metal finish. The bottom metal shows scrapes & scratches which have removed areas of the paint finish. The exposed bottom metal shows discoloration from oxidation. The remaining metal shows scuffs, light scrapes & light handling marks. The screw heads show use. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good Plus to Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
The cocking indicator is located at the bottom front of the trigger guard.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with a 10 round magazine. It shows several scrapes & scratches that have removed portions of the paint finish. The exposed metal shows discoloration from oxidation. It is in about Very Good condition. The rifle has an unmarked leather sling attached. It shows scrapes & discoloration. It is in Very Good Plus to Fine condition.
Our Assessment: This Rare Luxembourg contract FN 49 was produced by Fabrique Nationale (FN) of Belgium. It is chambered in .30-06. It is estimated that less than 10,000 were produced in this contract. The rifle has nice deep markings that include “AL” (Armee Luxembourg) as well as matching part numbers on the receiver, top cover, bolt, and bolt carrier. This FN 49 looks impressive and will add to your Military collection. It should be lots of fun out at the range too.
