Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “336XLR”, “THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. ILION, NEW YORK, U.S.A. / ****MODEL 336XLR – CAL. 30/30 WIN.****”. The left side of the barrel at the receiver is marked “H”. The right side of the barrel is marked with Marlin’s two-lined warning and “REP” in an oval. The left side of the receiver is marked with a QR code and “MR66467D”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a hooded brass beaded blade that is fixed to a serrated riser and screwed into the barrel. The rear sight is a flip-up semi-buckhorn leaf with a U-notch and elevator that is dovetailed to the barrel. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped, and filled in four places for mounting a scope (not included).
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece grey laminate checkered wood with a capped pistol grip, fluted straight comb, sling stub in the belly and forend cap, and a soft rubber weave-textured Decelerator buttpad. The wood shows no perceivable imperfections. There are no chips or cracks. The checkering shows handling wear and is well defined. The LOP measures 13 3/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the rubber buttpad. The buttpad shows light wear around the edges and remains soft. The stocks rate in about Fine-Excellent overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore but there is stubborn fouling present. The bore has an M.E. of 0.0.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There is a faint scratch on the barrel to the left of the front sight. There are infrequent sparse little nicks and scratches on the receiver and lever. There is faint operational wear. The markings are clear. The screw heads are sharp. Overall this rifle rates in about Fine-Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The safety lever is present. There is also a push safety on the receiver that blocks the hammer from hitting the pin. The lever extends slightly past ninety degrees in the open position. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Marlin Model 336 is a lever-action rifle and carbine made by Marlin Firearms. Since its introduction in 1948, it has been offered in a number of different calibers and barrel lengths, but is commonly chambered in .30-30 Winchester or .35 Remington, using a 20- or 24-inch barrel. Currently, the model with a 24-inch barrel is only available in .30-30 Winchester. This is a beautiful stainless steel Marlin 336XLR sporting a grey laminate stock and a 24” barrel. It is chambered in the ever popular .30-30 Winchester, the caliber said to have taken more deer in North America than any other caliber. This rifle appears to have spent the majority of its life in the safe, showing hardly any wear in about excellent condition.
