Our Assessment: The Springfield Armory M1A is a semi-automatic rifle made by Springfield Armory, Inc., beginning in 1974, based on the M14 rifle, for the civilian and law enforcement markets in the United States. “M1A” is a proprietary name for Springfield Armory’s M14-pattern rifle. Early M1A rifles were built with surplus G.I. parts until Springfield Armory, Inc. began manufacturing their own. This Springfield Armory M1A Scout Semi-Automatic Rifle takes .308 Winchester ammunition. The Scout Squad is an M1A marketed toward law enforcement users. It has an 18-inch barrel and a forward-mounted optical sight base. This particular rifle is New York compliant and the barrel is not threaded to accept any muzzle attachment. According to Springfield’s website, “The M1A™ Scout Squad 7.62 NY-compliant rifle offers Empire State shooters a state-of-the-art defensive rifle encased within traditional wood furniture. A National Match front sight combined with a military aperture 0.0690″ steel rear keeps the gun shooting straight, fast, and true. Tool-free MOA adjustments could not be easier, while the classic walnut stock makes it gorgeous. Springfield Armory® builds these exceptionally capable rifles especially for New Yorkers.” This one has a smooth walnut stock that is in excellent condition. The bore is bright and the mechanics are strong. This is a beautiful rifle that seems to have seen very little use. Please see our photos and good luck!
