Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK / MADE IN U.S.A.”, “-MODEL 12 – 12 GA. – FULL / -WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL-” and “FOR SUPER SPEED & SUPER-X 3 IN.”. The top of the barrel at the rear and the top of the receiver at the front each have an ovalled “WP” proof. The bottom of the receiver and barrel extension are marked “1487889”. The bottom of the magazine tube and the barrel extension have indexing arrows.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a bead set on the barrel at the muzzle. The top of the receiver is serrated for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece walnut with a grooved slide handle, pistol grip, straight comb, and solid rubber Winchester buttpad. The buttstock has some minor play to the receiver, it is hardly noticeable and the stock screw likely just needs to be tightened. The stocks appear refinished. There are a few dings into the wood, most noticeable on the bottom of the forend. There are some scattered little marks through the finish, light compressions, minor scuffs, and draglines. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad. The pad has some light wear. Overall, the stocks are in about Very Good-Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion.
Overall Condition: This gun retains about 95% of its metal finish. The receiver has a couple of light scuffs, minor draglines, a couple of tiny freckles of frost, and a couple of little nicks. There are some scattered light handling marks on the metal surfaces. The barrel has a couple of small minor scuffs, a few little nicks through the finish, a couple of spots of light surface frost, and some finish loss at the muzzle. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp to lightly worn with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. This shotgun will slam-fire as designed. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Model 1912 (shortened to Model 12 in 1919) was the next step from the Winchester Model 1897 hammer-fired shotgun, which in turn had evolved from the earlier Winchester Model 1893 shotgun. With forged and machined steel parts, the ultimate reason for discontinuation of the Model 12 in 1964 was that it was simply too expensive to produce at a competitive price. When the money talks, the people listen. The primary competition at this time came from the much less expensive Remington Model 870, which had been introduced in 1950. This example is a 12 gauge made in 1955. It has a 30” Full choked barrel that is chambered for 3″ shells. It has a great bore and nice mechanics and will be a great gun for the field but will also be a nice addition to a Winchester collection missing a magnum model. Good luck and happy bidding!
