Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / MOD. 1895SS MICRO-GROOVE BARREL CAL. 45/70 GOV’T.”. The left rear of the barrel is marked with a circled “JM” proof. The upper tang is marked “04016205”.

Sights / Optics: This rifle is mounted with a flip-up semi-buckhorn “U” notched rear elevator sight that is dovetailed into the top of the barrel. The front sight is a hooded white bead dovetailed into a serrated ramped base which is screwed to the top of the barrel. The left side of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for a receiver sight. Equipped to the top of the receiver via a Burris rail and two rings is a Deerfield optic with a fixed 4x magnification and a duplex reticle. There are few light scratches toward the rear half of the optic. The lenses are clear. Overall, the optic rates in about Fine condition.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with a satin finish. The buttstock has a pistol grip, a black grip cap with white spacer, fluted comb, and a red solid rubber buttpad with white and black spacers and with a Marlin “Mounted Cowboy” logo in the center. The forend has a blued steel nosecap with a sling swivel stud on the bottom and there is another stud screwed into the belly just behind a “Marlin Bullseye”. There is a smooth diamond shape in the center of the machine cut checkering on the underside of the forend and another in the center of the checkering on each side of the wrist. There are a few scratches on the left side of the buttstock and there is a small scuff through the finish at the rear of the comb. The LOP measures 13 5/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The pad shows very a few spots of light discoloration, and is hard (the thin pad was probably hard when it came from the factory). The stocks rate in about Fine-Plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the Micro-Groove rifling is sharp. There are some sparsely scattered spots of faint erosion.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are some marks on the loading gate. There are some faint marks on the right side of the receiver. There is light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp and the markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine-Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lever is tight and the action is smooth. There is a lever safety and a half-cock safety position on the hammer in addition to a cross-bolt safety at the back of the receiver. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a “New Model” Marlin Model 1895SS lever action rifle made with a 22” barrel and three-quarter length magazine tube. The original Model 1895 rifle ceased production in 1915, and was upgraded and brought back into production in 1972. The barrel is chambered in .45-70 Govt. and has Micro-Groove rifling, which Marlin found back in the early 1950’s to produce tighter groups when used in conjunction with modern jacketed bullets. The rifle is in about Fine-Excellent condition with about 98% of its original finish remaining. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and only faint erosion. This rifle is perfect for elk or black bear hunting in the woods where a longer barrel would snag on every branch you pass, and its fast lever action will give you a quick 2nd shot on running game if you need it.
