Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. The right side of the barrel is marked “22 M.R.F. CTG.”. The right side of the frame has the four-line Marcas Registradas address. The left side of the frame has the Smith & Wesson logo. The yoke cut is marked “BHN7974 / MOD 648”. The yoke and sides of the grip frame have inspection marks. The rear face of the cylinder is marked “V” and the cutout for the ejector is marked “S”. The butt of the grip frame is marked with the serial number “BHN7974”. The interior of the right grip panel is marked “MAR 10 1992”.

Barrel Length: 6? with Full Underlug

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a Patridge blade pinned to a rise in the serrated rib. The rear sight is a white outlined square notch S&W micrometer sight adjustable for windage and elevation and is screwed to the top strap.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth Goncalo Alves combat stocks with finger grooves and medallions. There are a couple tiny marks through the finish, most noticeable on the bottom face of the left panel. There are light handling marks. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grip is in about Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are a few little nicks on the left side of the frame on the rear bow of the trigger guard. There are a few little nicks on the cylinder at the rear. There are a few draglines and handling marks. There is a small hairline scratch on the cylinder.  There is a very light turn line on the cylinder. There is some thinning on the edges of the front sight. The screw heads are mostly sharp but the sideplate screw that is under the grip is lightly worn. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder lockup has light play-in lockup on each of the six chambers. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is a cleaning kit, paperwork including the manual, and serial number matching box.

Our Assessment: This is a Smith & Wesson Model 648, 6-Shot .22 Magnum Single and Double Action Target Revolver. It has a stainless finish, 6” barrel, patridge front sight, micrometer rear sight, Goncalo Alves combat stocks, smooth combat trigger, and a semi-target hammer. This one has seen only light use, it still looks great and has a great bore. This revolver would be tremendous fun to shoot targets with or use for varmint hunting. It will also make a nice companion for a 686 if you have one. Any way you slice it this will be a nice addition to the collection of one lucky winner. Please see our photos and good luck!
