Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON / .45 COLT”. The right side of the barrel “43 “THE KING” 7 TIME CHAMPION 43″ in gold. The yoke cut is marked with the serial and model numbers “RLP0285 / MOD. 25-9”. The right side of the frame has the four-line Marcas Registradas and the left side has the monogram logo. The butt is marked “RLP0285”, the sides of the grip frame and yoke have inspection marks. The sideplate is marked with Richard Pettys head and autograph all in gold. The cylinder is marked “Champion / 1964 / 1967 / 1971 / 1972 / 1974 / 1975 / 1979” in gold. The interior of the right grip panel is marked “SEPT 10 1990”.

Barrel Length: 8 3/8″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a ramped serrated blade with a red insert set on an elevated base. The rear sight is a white outlined S&W micrometer click square notch rear sight adjustable for windage and elevation. The rib is serrated to reduce glare.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth Goncalo Alves target stocks with S&W medallions and a speedloader cut on both panels. There are one or two tiny marks on the bottom faces. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Excellent condition.

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There are a few little spots of faint surface erosion, hardly noticeable.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are a few light handling marks. Some of the gold finish in the markings is lightly worn. There is a faint dragline on the cylinder. The markings are clear. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this handgun rates in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder locks up with hardly any play on each of the six chambers. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is a wood presentation case and Richard Petty medallion.

Our Assessment: This is Smith & Wesson’s model 25-9, a heavy barreled target revolver chambered in .45 Colt with a 8 3/8″ barrel, adjustable sights, and Goncalo Alves target stocks. This one is the Richard Petty edition made to celebrate the legendary career of The King who retired in 1992. Richard Petty won Seven Nascar Championships and holds numerous records, he is statistically the most accomplished driver in the history of Nascar and one of the most respected names in all of motorsports. Smith & Wesson only made 802 and this one comes with its presentation case and medallion. It is in Excellent condition with about 98% of its metal finish with some scattered marks, a bright bore and a good cylinder lockup. This is an excellent addition to a Smith & Wesson collection and a nice pickup for the Nascar fan. Please see our pictures and good luck!
