Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 99% of its metal finish. There is a cylinder drag line that does not break the finish, some light handling marks and some marks on the front face of the cylinder that do penetrate the finish. This revolver still retains the bluing on the ejector rod, that’s how little it has been handled and shot. The checkered .400” wide hammer and serrated service trigger retain their case coloring. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear except as discussed. Overall, this handgun rates in about Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly in both single and double action. This revolver has a square butt and counterbored cylinder with a finely checkered top strap, rib and rear sight tang. The front strap and backstrap have the ten line serrations. We did not fire this handgun.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The original blue two piece Bangor Punta factory box with metal reinforced corners is provided with an end label that correctly describes this revolver. With the exception of a few light scuffs and handling marks, the box is in Excellent condition inside and out. The sealed plastic bag protects the unused cotton bore mop, bristle bore brush, loop cleaning rod and S&W screwdriver, all in Excellent condition. Also provided are the protective S&W marked brown paper, owner’s manual, complete registration card, list of authorized warranty stations, holster and ammunition brochures, all in Fine condition but slightly darkened with age.
Our Assessment: This is like going back in time to get a S&W Model 27 in Excellent condition, with a 3 ½” barrel (discontinued in 1979) and counterbored cylinder (discontinued in 1982) with all the factory paperwork and tools still in the pristine factory box with matching end label. This is the .357 Magnum built on the large, square butt “N” frame with adjustable sights. It is made to take full power loads and still be controllable, or you can shot .38 Special cartridges and have a fine target gun. It would be hard to find a better made, more versatile revolver than this, even if you included current production models.
