Markings: The right side of the slide is marked ”GOLD CUP / NATIONAL MATCH” and with a trophy cup. The left side of the slide is marked “MATCH / .38″ followed by a target followed by “TARGET / SUPER” and there is a rampant colt at the rear. The right side of the frame is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A. / CMT470”. The barrel is marked “-COLT SUPER 38 AUTO N.M.-“. The left of the trigger guard is marked “VP” in triangle and the right is marked “G”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade fixed to the serrated rib of the slide. The rear sight is a square notch sight adjustable for windage and elevation and is pinned to the slide rib. The top of the slide has a matte finish for glare reduction.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a checkered black rubber Pachmayr grip. There are a few light handling marks. There are no rips or tears. Overall, the grips are in Fine Plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. The plunger housing has some play. There are some scattered scuffs and draglines. There is a light takedown arc on the left of the frame. There are a few little hairline scratches, the most noticeable are on the right side of the slide. There are some little scuffs and rubs. There is standard operational wear. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol is in Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The slide to frame fit has some light play. The trigger is crisp. There is a firing pin block safety (series 80). We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, it may need a thorough cleaning to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes in a blue Colt Match Target soft case with a single 9-round magazine. Occiasonally the magazine follower will go above the slide stop preventing the magazine from being removed.

Our Assessment: Introduced as an off-the-shelf target pistol, Colt’s Gold Cup National Match 1911s have been a benchmark standard of quality for decades. There have been some variations since their introduction in the late ’50s, the Series ’70 introduced a collet barrel bushing, series ’80 a firing pin safety, and newer models offered various combinations of features, grips and sights. This is a Match Target variant with a series 70 collet barrel bushing, series 80 safety, and stainless finish. From what we can gather a limited number of these were made in the late 80s and early 90s. Whether you’re looking for a great 1911-style target pistol or want to add a Gold Cup National Match to your collection, this is a great pistol to add to any safe in America.
