Markings: The right side of the slide is marked ”COLT GOVERNMENT MODEL”. The left side of the slide is marked “COLT MK IV / -SERIES 80-” and with a rampant colt. The right side of the frame is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. HARTFORD, CONN. U.S.A. / SS53834”. The barrel is marked “-CAL 40 S&W-“. The left of the trigger guard is marked with the “VP” proof and “2”, the right is marked “J”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade with a red insert and is dovetailed to the front of the slide. The rear sight is a Bo-Mar square notch adjustable for windage and elevation and is dovetailed into the slide. The top of the slide has a matte finish for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a checkered black rubber grip that wraps around the front strap and has gold medallions. There are a few light handling marks. There are no rips or tears. There is a small gap between the right side of the backstrap and the bottom rear corner of the right side of the grip, hardly noticeable. The checkering is strong. The grip rates in about Fine Plus condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are some scattered light scuffs and draglines, most noticeable on the slide flats. There are some spots of discoloration on the matte portions that should clean up. There is minor operational wear. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The screw heads are undamaged. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol is in Fine Plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The slide to frame fit is snug. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this firearm. As with all used firearms, it may need a thorough cleaning to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Government Model served the United States military well through two World Wars and still sees some limited use in more modern configurations to this day. It has been no less popular on the civilian market, with dozens of companies making hundreds of variations on the original. This pistol is a MK IV Series ’80 Government Model chambered for .40 S&W with a stainless finish. It has a beavertail safety and a curved checkered mainspring housing with an integral extended magazine well. With its adjustable sight and crisp trigger, this would be great for target shooting or the USPSA single stack division. Please see our photos and good luck!
