Markings: The left shoulder of the barrel is marked “1894 COWBOY LIMITED”, “THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / *****MODEL 1894CB – CAL. 44-40 WIN. *****” and a poorly stamped “JM” proof at the rear. The right side is marked with a 2-line warning. The left side of the receiver at the bottom is marked with the serial number. The top of the bolt is marked “44/450”.

Barrel Length: 24” Octagonal

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a semi-buckhorn with a reversible V/U-notch leaf and an elevator that is dovetailed to the barrel. The leaf has a white diamond aim guide. The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled in four places for an optic mount and the left of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for a side mounted sight (not included).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with a steel nosecap, straight grip, straight comb and a checkered hard rubber Marlin buttplate. The Marlin bullseye is present in the belly. There are some sparse tiny compressions and minor scuffs. The checkering is sharp and there are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The buttplate shows a few minor marks at the heel and has sharp checkering. The stocks rate in about Fine-Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are just a few faint scratches on the top of the barrel. The top and bottom of the receiver show a couple faint marks as well. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear with soft edges. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine-Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The crossbolt safety is present. The lever safety functions properly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a Marlin Model 1894 Cowboy Limited lever action rifle made in 1997 and chambered for .44-40 Winchester. The .44 Winchester, a.k.a. .44 Winchester Central Fire—later .44 Winchester Center Fire (WCF)—featured a 200-gr., flat-point lead bullet loaded over 40 grains of black powder at 1,245 f.p.s. from a 24″ barrel, although Winchester originally claimed 1,300 f.p.s. Almost immediately, the cartridge was a hit. The rifle is in about Fine-Excellent condition. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion. Please see our photos and good luck!
