Sights / Optics: The sights are a Trijicon night-sight set. The front sight is a blade with a single tritium lamp, dovetailed to the front of the slide. The rear sight is a swept Novak-style square notch with two tritium lamps, dovetailed and screw-set to the rear of the slide. The front sights lamp has died completely. The rear sight’s lamps have dimmed, but are useable in very low-light environments. The sights function well as a three-dot set in the light.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece serrated G-10 panels with a thumb-scallop on the right behind the magazine release. The grips have no notable wear or damage, only light handling marks. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore but there is stubborn fouling along the edges of the rifling.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are a few scattered light nicks, scuffs and a couple of minor scratches. The action shows light operational wear. The screw heads are lightly tool marked with strong sockets, the pin heads are unmarred. The markings are clear, though the left-side slide legend is struck deeper toward the top than the bottom. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The slide has barely perceptible play to the frame. The trigger is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes in a blue plastic Colt box with a single 7-round Wilson Combat magazine and an assortment of factory paperwork including manual. The box’s label has mostly torn off, but the serial number is still present as is the Colt Custom Shop logo.

Our Assessment: The Government Model served the United States military well through two World Wars and still sees some limited use in more modern configurations to this day. It has been no less popular on the civilian market, with dozens of companies making hundreds of variations on the original. This pistol was made by the Colt Custom Shop and is a Series ’70 Government Model Level II. The “Level” series of pistols, I, II and III had varying extra features factory installed by the Custom Shop. The Level II has a beveled magazine well integral to its checkered flat mainspring housing, G10 grips, extended beavertail grip safety, skeletonized hammer, long solid aluminum trigger, National Match barrel and Novak-style sights. This pistol shows signs of responsible use, but is still in Fine condition. It should make a great shooter or addition to a 1911 collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
