Markings: The right side of the barrel is marked “S.&W. 357 MAGNUM”. The left side of the barrel is marked “SMITH & WESSON”. The yoke cut is marked “ABC4149 / M / MOD. 686”. The left side of the frame has the S&W monogram logo and “NHSP”. The right side of the frame, below the cylinder, is marked with the four-line marcas registradas. The butt is marked with the serial number “ABC4149”. The crane and sides of the grip frame are marked with inspection marks. The rear face of the cylinder is marked “V”. The ejector rod cutout of the underlug is marked “S”. The interior of the right grip is marked “1 1983”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramped blade with a red insert and is set on a serrated elevated base that is integral to the rib, which is serrated for glare reduction. The rear sight is a S&W micrometer click, flat top, square notched leaf that is adjustable for windage and elevation.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are checkered Goncalo Alves target stocks with S&W medallions and a speedloader cut. There are a few little scratches, most noticeable on the back of the left panel. There are some spots of finsih loss, some of the most noticeable are on the right panel at the top. There is a little chip loss out of the front bottom corner of the left panel. The checkering is sharp. Overall, the grips are in Very Good-Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore but there is some stubborn leading at the forcing cone.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. There are some scuffs and rubs that have caused smooth spots, some of the most noticeable are on the trigger guard. There are a few scratches, some of the most noticeable are on the cylinder. There is a turn line on the cylinder. The trigger and hammer have light operational wear. The screw heads are sharp with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lockup produces very light side-to-side movement with the trigger depressed. The double-action is smooth and the single action is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: As the name implies, the Distinguished Combat Magnum Stainless is a remarkable piece of machinery that is tough enough for any application. This revolver rates in Fine condition, the bore is bright with sharp rifling and the action has minimal play in full lockup. This 4″ revolver will be a good choice for carry, use as a hunting sidearm, or home defense revolver. With that being said, this one is a New Hampshire State Police gun and is in nice shape, it will make a great addition to a S&W collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
