Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “THE MARLIN FIREARMS CO. NORTH HAVEN, CT. U.S.A. / MOD. 336CS MICRO-GROOVE BARREL CAL. 30/30 WIN.”. The left side of the barrel at the receiver is marked with a circled “JM” proof. The right side of the barrel is marked with Marlin’s two-lined warning. The upper tang is marked “04054940”.

Barrel Length: 20 1/4”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a hooded beaded blade that is fixed to a serrated riser and screwed into the barrel. The rear sight is a flip-up semi-buckhorn blade with a U-notch leaf that has an elevator and is dovetailed to the barrel. Equipped to the top of the receiver via two Weaver rings is a Bushnell Sportview scope with 3-9x magnification and a duplex reticle. There are some scratches on the top of the scope at the front as well as some other light handling marks throughout. The lenses are clear. The scope rates in about Fine overall condition. The left rear of the receiver is drilled, tapped, and filled in two places for a side-mounted sight.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered wood with a banded forearm, capped pistol grip, fluted straight comb, and a firm brown rubber Marlin buttpad. There is a sling stud front and rear. The Marlin Bullseye is present in the belly. The wood shows some evenly scattered light draglines, compressions, and nicks. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2” from the front of the trigger to the back of the rubber buttpad. The pad shows some minor marks along the edges with sharp checkering. The stocks rate in about Fine overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with no erosion. The rifling is deep and sharp. There is an M.E. of about 2.0.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. There is faint thinning at the leading edges of the barrel. There are scattered faint lines on the sides of the receiver. There are a few light marks on the magazine tube. There is light operational wear on the hammer. The markings are clear. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in about Fine-Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lever safety is present. There is also a push safety that blocks the hammer. The lever extends slightly past ninety degrees in the open position. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a 336CS carbine that was manufactured in 1996. It bears the JM proof mark and contains the Marlin Bullseye in the belly. These are sturdy, dependable lever action rifles that are revered in competition shooting and also make great hunting rifles.
