Our Assessment: The Weatherby Mark V has a long history, in production continuously since 1957 and has been produced by several manufacturers including Howa of Japan and Sauer of Germany. This example was made in the United States of America at the Weatherby Custom Shop of Paso Robles, CA, and is, in a word, exquisite. At first blush one notices the lustrous, deep blue of the barrel and receiver, looking for all the world like a midnight lake under a full moon. Standard roll marks culminate in the fine engraving on the magazine floorplate. Fine machine jeweling catches the eye through the ejection port. The eye moves then to the French Walnut stock with its attractive grain and rosewood accents, the light brown rubber of the recoil pad matching perfectly. But this is just the start of this encounter. This Mark V Deluxe is chambered in the powerhouse .460 Weatherby, a cartridge suited to taking down dangerous game such as elephant or rhinoceros. The Mark V was originally designed as a rifle that could withstand the sheer power of the Weatherby cartridge assortment, and while this rifle is beautiful, it is in equal parts a devastating and capable tool, the epitome of its purpose. The question is not whether you should bid on this rifle or not, but rather how you will fulfill its destiny when you win it. In overall Excellent condition, this rifle, which includes a heavy-duty luggage case and a fine Leupold scope is a true hunter’s rifle that will be a prized part of any collection, but most importantly, yours. Good luck.
