Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece smooth walnut with beavertail forend, pistol grip, straight comb, checkered steel buttplate, a sling swivel mounted to the belly and an inlet 4″ accessory rail in the forend. The action has been bedded and the barrel free-floated. The rail has a sling swivel installed at the front and a swivel/handstop installed behind. The stock has some scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has light wear around the edges and well defined checkering. Overall, the stock is in about Very Good-plus condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. Our gauge shows an ME of about 1.5.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. There are some scattered minor nicks, scuffs and scratches with one more notable scratch on the left of the chamber ring. There is finish wear on the edges of the trigger guard. The action shows operational wear and there is handling wear on the bolt handle. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the rear of the bolt. Pushed to the front, the safety is OFF. Rotated back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage 1958 pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Bull Gun. The Bull Gun is a monster with a 28″ Extra Heavy barrel and provision for mounting all kinds of iron sights or optics. This example is chambered in the venerable .300 H&H Magnum. It’s a fairly uncommon configuration for a Winchester Model 70, with all Bull Guns constituting less than half a percent of production. This rifle checks a lot of boxes for the Winchester collector, but should also still make for a great target rifle, especially bedded and floated in its stock. Please see our photos and good luck!
