Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S. OF AMERICA / WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL”, “WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK”, “MODEL 70”, “.220 SWIFT”, and a “PW” in an oval proof mark. The left side of the receiver is marked with a “PW” in an oval proof mark and “WINCHESTER / TRADE MARK”. The right side is marked with the serial number, “109013”.
Barrel Length: 26”
Sights/Optics: There is a dovetail notch filled with a tab at the front of the barrel. The barrel is drilled, tapped, and filled for mounting a rear sight (no rear sight is included). The top of the receiver is drilled, tapped, and filled with an optic rail that has attached two 1” optic rings (no optic is included).
Stock Configuration and ConditionGrip: The stock is a one-piece smooth wood with beavertail forend, pistol grip, fluted straight comb, and checkered sheet steel buttplate. There are sling swivels on the belly of the buttstock and the underside of the forend (x2). There are light-to-moderate nicks on either side of the forend nose. The belly of the buttstock has a few light nicks and some very minor material loss at the toe. There are no cracks. The buttplate has some minor wear. Overall, the stock is in Very Good-to-Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: The rifle retains about 93% of its finish. There is light scuff wear from a previously installed rear sight and there is also intermittent minor nicks and some light scuffing about midway. The action has very light operational wear. The markings are clear. The screwheads are sharp. Overall, the rifle is in Very Good-plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle. As with all previously owned firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Target rifle chambered in .220 Swift and made in 1948. The rifle is in Very Good-plus condition with evidence of measured and intentional use in the field with the most noteworthy defect being to the wear at the nose of the forend. This is a beautiful rifle in a great target cartridge that is ready to test your skills. That said, the Pre-64 Winchesters have high collector interest and this would be a good addition to a Winchester collection, regardless of the intended use! Good luck and happy bidding!
