Model: P1870ECS, Single Action Army, 3rd Generation Custom shop Horse Pistol. Only 250 of these were made for Lew Horton. 180 of the 250 had unfluted cylinders. This is one of the 70 fluted cylinder guns. The box label appears to identify this as 207 of the 250.

Action Type: 6-Shot Single Action Revolver with Side Gate Loading Cylinder

Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .45”. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”. The left side of the frame is marked “PAT. SEPT. 19, 1871 / JULY 2,72 JAN. 19,75” and with the “Rampant Colt” logo. The left front of the trigger guard is marked with a “VP” in a triangle and at the rear with “K”. The right of the trigger guard is marked “H”. The bottom of the frame in front of the trigger guard and the left of each portion of the frame are marked “SA58461”. Each portion of the grip frame, the right-rear of the frame under the grip, and the rear of the loading gate are each marked with assembly number “207C”. The front face of the cylinder is marked “58461” and “207C”. The inside of each grip panel has “58461” hand-written. The top of the backstrap has a Colt logo in gold.

Barrel Length: 7 ½”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a quarter round blade fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a square groove in the top strap.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are a custom factory option set of smooth ivory with gold-colored Colt medallions which have perfect fit to the grip straps. The panels are free of any notable damages. There are no chips or cracks. The grips rate in Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 99% of its metal finish. There is no notable wear or damage, only light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: We elected not to cycle the revolver to prevent wear. We do guarantee proper function should you choose to fire this revolver. We have not fired this revolver.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: Included is the original faux-wood cardboard box with styrofoam inserts, an assortment of factory paperwork including manual, a wood Colt display case and the cardboard cover for the display case. The cardboard box has scattered light storage wear with some fraying and tears at edges and corners. The label has come off of the box-end, but is included. Overall, the box is in about Good-plus condition. The display case has a burgundy-colored fabric-lined french-fit interior and comes with a key for its lock. The case has been kept in Excellent condition by its cardboard cover, showing no notable wear or damage.

Our Assessment: This is a Special Edition 3rd Generation Single Action Army revolver produced in 1984 as a distributor exclusive for Lew Horton. Called the “Horse Pistol”, there were 250 made with 180 having un-fluted cylinders and only 70 with fluted cylinders. Lew Horton exclusives have become their own area of collecting, especially recently as the company has closed down. The rarity of this Special Edition SAA combined with its extraordinary condition will make for a great addition to any collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
