Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to a serrated, ramped base fixed to the front of the barrel. The base is grooved for a hood which is not present. The rear sight is a folding “U”-notch sight with white triangle aiming reference dovetailed to the rear of the barrel. The notch is fine adjustable for elevation. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with two-piece Weaver-style bases installed. The left-rear of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled for a receiver sight (none included).

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece checkered walnut with a pistol grip, monte-carlo comb, sling swivels front and rear, and a checkered black alloy buttplate. The stock has a few scattered light nicks, scuffs and scratches with a more notable compression on the bottom-front of the grip. There are a few spots of pooled finish in the checkering. The checkering is well defined. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has some light wear around the edges and at the heel with sharp checkering. Overall, the stock is in about Fine condition as refinished.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. Our gauge shows an ME of about 1.0.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 97% of its metal finish. There are a few light nicks and scratches on the bottom metal and the barrel at the muzzle. The bolt knob shows handling wear and surface oxidation. The action has light operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the rear of the bolt. Pulled to the rear, the safety is ON, locking both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Featherweight rifle chambered for the classic .30-06 cartridge and made in 1957. The rifle appears to have seen gentle use with minor wear in the stock, but retains about 97% of its metal finish with a great bore and strong mechanics. It comes with iron sights as well as Weaver bases installed on the receiver if you wish to mount an optic. Ammunition for this rifle is (usually) readily available in a variety of loadings and makes for a wonderful hunting rifle that can take just about any game in North America. Whether you’re looking to add to your Winchester collection or just want a great hunting rifle, this will be a great rifle to add to any safe in America. Please see our photos and good luck!
