Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two piece Skeet-grade checkered walnut with extended slide handle, straight grip, straight comb and an orange rubber Winchester buttpad. The stocks have some light nicks, scuffs and scratches. The forend finish appears original with well defined checkering. The buttstock has been refinished with smoother checkering. The condition of the pad and fit of the spacer likely indicate that they are not original to the stock. The checker pattern of the wrist appears factory, but slightly more coarse than the slide handle which may indicate that one or the other has been replaced. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 3/4″ from the front fo the trigger to the back of the pad. The pad has minor wear. Overall, the stocks are in Very Good condition as partially refinished/not original to the gun.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: Most remaining finish is Original, the barrel extension shows some cold blue touch-up.
Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright. There are a few spots of minor erosion and a little stubborn fouling in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 8+ out of 10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 85% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at all edges. There is some scattered finish wear, most notable on the magazine tube and on the barrel extension where there is some cold blue touch-up. There is more minor wear on the barrel toward the rear and in front of the magazine tube. There are some light nicks, scuffs and scratches. There is infrequent minor surface oxidation. The action shows operational wear. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly and smoothly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None
Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-war Winchester Model 42 .410 bore pump action shotgun from 1933, the year this model was introduced. The Model 42 was the first pump shotgun specifically designed for the .410 chambering and resembles its larger cousin the Model 12. It is in Very Good condition, showing wear consistent with honest use in the field. The stocks are skeet-grade with checkering, extended slide handle, and a straight grip, the buttstock has been equipped with a Winchester rubber buttpad The shotgun retains a nice bore and strong mechanics. It would make a fine addition to any collection, especially if you have a new generation of shooters to train. Please see our photos and good luck!
