Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece checkered walnut with beavertail forend, flat-bottom pistol grip, straight comb and solid orange rubber Winchester buttpad. The stocks have minor handling wear. There are a few odd lines at the toe-end of the belly which appear as though they could be fills where the grain was open, please see the photos. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 14″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad, 13 1/8″ to the back of the wood. Drop at comb is approximately 1 1/2″, drop at heel 2 3/8″. The cast is about neutral. The pad has some discoloration in the face and minor wear. Overall, the stocks are in about Fine-plus condition.

Type of Finish: Blued

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bores are bright with no erosion.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 93% of its metal finish. The finish is thinning at some edges. The most notable finish loss is in the trigger plate which has discoloration from oxidation in the wear. The surrounding portion of the bottom of the receiver has much more minor wear with similarly minor oxidation, the bottom corners of the forend iron have wear and oxidation somewhere in between. There are a few scattered light scuffs and scratches with infrequent spots of minor erosion, most at the breech-end of the barrels. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun is in about Very Good-Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly including ejectors. The trigger selector is mounted on the trigger. The safety engages automatically when the action is opened. The barrels lock up with no play to the receiver. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This shotgun comes in a luggage case fit for the stocked action and barrel assembly with one lidded and one open accessory compartment, english-style straps and brass combination latches. The inside of the lid has a Winchester Repeating Arms Co. Model 21 label. The case has light storage wear on the exterior and faint wear on the interior, in about Fine condition. Also included is a Cody Firearms Records search for this shotgun.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 21 was their deluxe side by side shotgun. The shotgun’s total production was approximately 33,000 guns with sales starting in 1930 and continuing into the early 1980s. The Model 21 was Winchester’s effort to make a quality side by side shotgun to rival those of high-end makers such as Parker and Fox. Several custom features were available and this example has been equipped with a single selective trigger and selective ejectors, though the included Cody Firearms Records search does not mention trigger or ejectors. It has beautifully figured walnut stocks with a beavertail forend and Winchester buttpad. The Winchester Model 21 shotguns are very collectable, sought after for both their variety of configurations and their quality as a shooter. With its nice condition, we expect the collectors and shooters to both take quite an interest in this gun and it comes with a nice luggage case for display, storage or transport. Please see our photos and good luck!
