The stock has light handling wear with some scattered minor nicks, scuffs and scratches. There is one more notable ding/scratch on the right of the forend below the barrel’s rear sight mount, and a more notable scratch in the comb at the heel. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/4″ from the front of the installed trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate shows light wear and some scattered minor surface oxidation with well defined checkering. Overall, the stock is in about Very Good-plus condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: The bolt has been jeweled and the trigger has been replaced (see Mechanics). Otherwise, the finish is Original.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. Our gauge shows an ME of about 1.75.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its metal finish. There are a few scattered minor nicks and scuffs. The action shows light operational wear and there is handling wear on the bolt knob. There is infrequent very minor surface oxidation, almost all in the magazine floorplate. The screw heads range from sharp to tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Good condition and will be Fine once the issue with the trigger has been addressed (see Mechanics).

Mechanics: This rifle is not currently safe to fire. The trigger needs to be repaired or replaced, it currently drags on the inside of the trigger guard, preventing the sear from catching consistently. Depending on the position of the trigger, the striker may follow when the bolt is rotated into lock, it may fall after the bolt has been rotated but without pressing the trigger, or jostling of the gun can cause the sear to break which will fire the rifle if loaded. The trigger needs to be replaced/repaired so that it does not catch on the inside of the trigger guard. Otherwise, the action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the rear of the bolt. Pushed to the front, the safety is OFF. Rotated back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage 1957 pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 Bull Gun. The Bull Gun is a monster with a 28″ Extra Heavy barrel and provision for mounting all kinds of iron sights or optics. This example has had its trigger replaced, and it currently drags on the inside of the trigger guard making for an inconsistent sear engagement. Once the trigger has been repaired or replaced, this is going to make for a fantastic target rifle. Chambered in the venerable .300 H&H Magnum, this rifle is a wonderful combination of precision, power, and range. It’s also a fairly uncommon configuration for a Winchester Model 70, as well as being a pre-’64 production example, checking a lot of boxes for the Winchester collector. Please see our photos and good luck!
