Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 95% of its metal finish. The slide and frame have a few scattered light marks. The safety lever has some light marring and minor surface oxidation. The outside of the extractor has finish wear. The barrel has light operational wear and minor discoloration from oxidation at the chamber. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this pistol is in about Very Good-Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The pistol features a magazine disconnect safety, thumb safety that doubles as a decocker and a nice slide to frame fit, with little measurable play. The double action trigger pull is smooth, single action has a smooth takeup followed by a crisp break with a short reset. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with a two-piece blue cardboard S&W box with metal-reinforced corners and serial-matching label, manual, and a single 8-round magazine. The box has scattered light wear and some light fraying at corners, in about Very Good condition. The magazine shows light operational wear, intact feed lips and a strong spring in about Very Good-Fine condition.

Our Assessment: This model 39 from Smith & Wesson is in about Very Good-plus condition. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, about 95% of the finish remains and overall, this is a great example of a first generation, single-stack, Smith & Wesson semi-automatic. The aluminum frame makes it lighter than it’s all-steel forbears though it feels more solid than it’s polymer-frame descendants. This is one of the earlier 39s, with the original long extractor, made between 1957 and 1969. It comes with its original box and one magazine. This pistol would make an nice addition to a Smith & Wesson collection or serve the buyer for decades to come as a carry gun or recreational shooter. Ammunition for this 9mm pistol is widely available and reasonably priced. Please see our pictures and good luck!
