The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER / -TRADE MARK-”. The right side of the receiver’s chamber ring is marked “3469”. The bottom of the bolt body is hand-scribed “3469”.

Barrel Length: 24″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a brass beaded blade dovetailed to a hooded, textured, ramped base fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a “U”-notch leaf and elevator sight dovetailed to a boss at the rear of the barrel with the notch fine-adustable for elevation. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with Redfield Bridge Type scope bases and rings holding a Carl Zeiss Zielklein 2.25x scope with German post reticle (SN: 56516) which has a “Ziel- / klein” marked leather lense-cover attached to the body. The scope has some scattered light wear on the exterior with fairly clear glass, in about Very Good condition.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is one-piece hand checkered walnut with a pistol grip, straight comb, sling studs front and rear, and a checkered blued steel shotgun-style buttplate. The stock has minor handling wear with some scattered light compressions, scuffs and scratches. The checkering is well defined, nearly sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The plate has finish wear at the heel and toe, some scattered light marks, and well defined, mostly sharp checkering. Overall, the stock is in about Very Good-Fine condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is mostly bright with sharp rifling. There is infrequent minor erosion in the bore, some of which will likely prove to be stubborn fouling after a patient cleaning. Our gauge shows an ME of about 1.0.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 92% of its metal finish. Most of the finish loss is in the floorplate which has handling wear and some minor discoloration from oxidation. The finish is lightly thinning at some edges, most notable on the trigger guard. The barrel and receiver have only a few scattered light marks. The bolt body shows light operational wear and the knob has handling wear. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tool marked with strong slots. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle is in about Very Good-Fine condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the top-rear of the bolt. Pushed forwards, the safety is ON. If pulled back all the way, the safety is OFF. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the installed scope as described.

Our Assessment: This is a vintage pre-1964 Winchester Model 70 rifle chambered in .30-06 and is a fairly quite example made in 1937. The rifle is the “Standard Rifle” style with factory iron sights and checkered walnut stock. It has been combined with a vintage Carl Zeiss Zielklein 2.25x scope with a German post reticle. Chambered for the classic .30-06 cartridge, this rifle and its scope will allow for fast target acquisition with a rifle suitable for just about any North American game. That said, the Pre-64 Winchesters have high collector interest, and this very early example with a period quality scope would be a great addition to a Winchester collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
