Our Assessment: The S&W 1006 is the 10mm pistol developed by Smith & Wesson for the FBI’s request for a new pistol following a shootout in Miami in 1986. The 10mm was designed by Col. Jeff Cooper to be more powerful and flatter shooting than the .45 ACP. It is primarily used for rural law enforcement, personal defense and hunting. Until the FBI’s request, it had almost become an obsolete cartridge, popular with hand-loaders and recoil junkies. After the request, there was renewed interest, though the FBI eventually dropped the 10mm in favor of the lower-recoil .40 S&W cartridge. This example of the 1006 is in Excellent condition, appearing to have spent more time in its box than out. In addition to its original box, it comes a pair of magazines and cleaning tools as well as an adjustment tool for its sights. This would make a good defense gun, especially if you’re hiking out in bear country, and would be a fine addition to any collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
