Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are smooth Goncalo alves target grips with silver colored S&W logo medallions. There are no chips or cracks or compression marks in either grip. The grain on the bottom of the grips was matched and ‘book-ended”. The grips rate in about As New overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue
Finish Originality: All Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. It is likely that this revolver has not been fired since it left the factory.
Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 99% of its metal finish. It appears that this revolver has been dry-fired and as a result there are drag marks visible on the cylinder. The gold fill in the lettering is at least 99% still present. The screw heads are almost pristine, with only the sideplate screw behind the trigger showing any sign of distress. The .500” wide target hammer and trigger are nicely case colored. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Excellent to As New condition.
Mechanics: The single and double actions function correctly. We did not fire this revolver.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: There is a blue “velvet” lined, rosewood stained mahogany presentation box with a rectangular gold colored metal inset on the cover. The inscription on the inset reads “Smith & Wesson / 125th Anniversary Commemorative / 18522 – 1977”. The cover of the box has a few compression marks and an about ½” white paint mark. The other sides are much the same, with a few dings and marks, except for the back which is still excellent. The box is finger jointed with brass hinges and lock. Two keys are provided. The exterior of the box is in about Fine condition at best. The interior lining has a tear at the muzzle, but otherwise has survived pretty well. There is a pewter colored “coin” with a likeness of Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson on one side and the same S&W logo that has been described on the sideplate. Contained in the lid, held in by leather straps is a book by Roy G. Jenks “125 Years With Smith & Wesson”. This book is in excellent condition.
Our Assessment: There were 9948 of this collector’s edition made, all in 1977. It appears that other than some handling, this example has been stored well and certainly can be described as being in Excellent condition. Only the exterior of the presentation box might be considered in lesser (Fine) condition. The book included in this package later became available to the public as Roy G. Jenks’ “History of Smith & Wesson” in a slightly changed edition. This is the entire package: medallion, book, locking presentation case with keys and one beautiful S&W Model 25-3.
