Markings: The upper tang is marked “Model 1894 / Winchester / Pat. Aug. 21. 1894”. There is a “c” on the underside of the frame, forward of the trigger guard. The serial number “47290” is stamped on the underside of the frame. The top of the barrel is marked “Manufactured By The / Winchester repeating Arms Co. New Haven, Conn. U.S.A.” and “.32-40”. The lower left tang is marked “6243 SRB GH”. The inside of the buttplate is marked “C 2894”. The butt of the stock, under the plate is marked “94 / 5735”.

Sights / Optics: The gun is mounted with a front blade in a dovetail slot and a rear leaf and elevator semi buckhorn sight, also in a dovetail slot.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are deluxe, with checkered wood and pistol grip. The wood has been sanded and re-varnished some time ago, though the checkering can still be seen. The wood to metal fit was affected, though not severely. There are numerous dings and marks, most of them under the existing finish. There are no splits or cracks. The LOP measures about 12 7/8″from the trigger to the rear of the butt plate. The stocks rate in about Good overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is visible the entire length. There is mild erosion throughout the bore.
Overall Condition: This gun retains about 15% of its metal finish, primarily in protected areas. Much of the finish has thinned and turned a light patina. There are only one or two patches of frosting on the barrel. The frame shows blue around the screws and a general frosting with a light patina. there are dings and marks throughout, though most of the wear is from age and no abuse is evident. The metal is primarily smooth on this nice rifle. The screw heads are very good, with only slight marking. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about Very Good – Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this rifle.

Our Assessment: This is a great rifle, acceptable for almost any collection. The gun has numerous special order features; button mag, 26″ barrel, pistol gripped and deluxe wood. on top of all this, the gun is from 1896; the third year of production and still qualifying as an antique. You will find better condition 1894’s but few as desirable.
