Overall Condition: This pistol retains about 97% of its metal finish. The barrel has only light handling marks. The frame has a few light marks on the left under the cylinder. The cylinder has a thin turn-line, mostly not through the finish. Most screw heads are sharp, though the grip’s screw has finish loss and the trigger’s over-travel stop screw is damaged and may not be adjustable. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine-plus condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder produces almost no play in lockup of all 8 chambers. The double action trigger pull is smooth, the single action is crisp. The thumb-latch has been replaced with an extended latch. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes in a black nylon Performance Center zipper case with S&W wax paper. The case has no notable wear or damage with intact stitching and zipper, in about Excellent condition.
Our Assessment: The Model 627 was originally introduced by Smith & Wesson in 1989 as a special edition stainless version of the model 27, with a 6-shot cylinder. Production would later continue as an 8-shot Performance Center revolver. This example is one such Performance Center 627-5, a black and stainless steel 8-shot revolver with the cylinder chambered for .38 Super. This was a distributor exclusive for Bangers in 2002. It makes for a great defensive or competition revolver, with higher capacity than some semi-automatics and similar reloading speeds with moon clips. With .38 Super it will make Major for USPSA/IPSC competition and if you want to shoot Open, it is already drilled and tapped to accept an optic. It is in Fine-plus condition with evidence of light use but also responsible care and maintenance. The gun comes with a nice Performance Center zipper case and would make a great revolver to add to any collection. Please see our pictures and good luck.
