Sights / Optics: The front sight is a Patridge style blade integral to the serrated raised ramp pinned to the solid, serrated rib. The rear sight is an S&W micrometer click square notch adjustable for windage and elevation. The top of the frame and rib have serrations and a matte finish to reduce glare.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece checkered Goncalo Alves grips with extractor cutout and smooth diamonds around the grip screw escutcheons. The left panel has a nick in the diamond around the grip screw escutcheon which continues onto the first checker at its edge. Otherwise, the grips show only light handling marks. The checkering is sharp apart from the one nicked checker as noted. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in about Fine-plus condition and would be easily Excellent but for the nick.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 97% of its metal finish. The barrel has very faint wear on each side at the muzzle. The frame has very slight thinning at some sharper corners and edges, notable only on close inspection, and there are a few scattered light marks, the most notable on the trigger guard. The cylinder has a faint, incomplete turn line, mostly not through the finish. There are some scattered light handling marks. The case coloring on the 0.500″ target hammer and trigger is strong with only faint operational wear. Checkering and serrations are sharp. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly in both single and double action. The double action trigger is smooth and the single action is crisp. The cylinder has very little play side-to-side and none front-to-rear on each of the six chambers. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes in a two-piece blue cardboard Smith & Wesson box with metal reinforced corners with an end label which correctly describes the gun including serial number. The box has a few light scuffs and scattered light wear, the interior has light wear from the contents. Overall, the box is in about Very Good-plus condition. Inside the box is S&W wax paper, cleaning rod, brush and grooved alloy-handle screwdriver. The brush shows light use.

Our Assessment: This is a Smith & Wesson Model 16-2, the K-32 Masterpiece with a 6” barrel in Excellent condition. There were only 3,630 of these revolvers manufactured from 1947-1974 when they were discontinued. While the model was later reintroduced in 1989, the newer 16-4 was chambered for .32 Magnum, had a shrouded ejector rod, crush-fit rather than pinned barrel and, perhaps most importantly, is not on the C&R list. This example of the original K-32 Masterpiece comes with its original box with signs of very little, if any use. It has wide target hammer and trigger and comes with a factory cleaning rod, brush and screwdriver. This would make a great addition to any Smith & Wesson or general revolver collection and with fewer than 4,000 made, you won’t see these every day. Please see our photos and good luck!
