Markings: The left side of the slide is marked “SMITH & WESSON / SPRINGFIELD, MA U.S.A.”. The barrel, visible through the ejection port, is marked “45 ACP / PERFORMANCE”. The left side of the frame is marked “SFF0278”. The right side of the frame is marked with Smith & Wesson’s Performance Center monogram logo. The right of the slide is marked “Short 45”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade with a tritium lamp dovetailed to the front of the slide. The rear sight is a square notch with two tritium lamps dovetailed and set-screw secured to the rear of the slide. The lamps have died but still function as a three-dot sight set.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grip is a one-piece checkered black plastic which wraps around the backstrap with S&W logo and “Smith & Wesson” on each side at the top. The frontstrap has 20 LPI precision checkering. The grips have no notable wear or damage, only light handling marks. There are no chips or cracks. The checkering is sharp. Overall, the grip is in about Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 96% of its metal finish. The polished flats on the slide have scattered light scuffs and scrapes, the matte finished areas have a few light scuffs. The frame has a light mark at the left-front of the dust cover and another on the left edge of the trigger guard at the bottom. The pin heads are unmarred. The markings are clear. Overall, this handgun rates in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The double action trigger is smooth. The single action trigger has a light, smooth takeup followed by a crisp break. The reset is quite short. The slide to frame fit shows almost no play. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This pistol comes with a black plastic Doskocil case with Performance Center sticker, no end-label, an assortment of factory paperwork including manual and a total of two 7-round magazines. The case has scattered scuffs and scrapes on the exterior with light wear from the contents on the interior, in about Very Good condition. The magazines show very faint operational wear and intact feed lips with strong springs, in about Fine-Excellent condition.
Our Assessment: Produced in 1996 for Lew Horton by the world-renowned Smith & Wesson Performance Center, the Shorty .45 is a custom-built single-stack .45 with hand-fitted titanium barrel bushing, oversize frame and slide rails, match-grade barrel, and an action which has been hand-honed by the Performance Center. While this pistol will surely bring interest from Smith & Wesson collectors, it is also a compact .45, ideal for concealed carry. If you’re going to trust your life to a pistol, one hand-built by the Performance Center is one of the best choices available, and 7-rounds of .45 is a nice choice for a carry gun.
