Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “-WINCHESTER MODEL 70-375 H&H MAGNUM- / -MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL-“. The top of the barrel at the receiver is marked with a circled “WP” proof. The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER”. The right side of the receiver’s chamber ring is marked “G1492878”. The bottom of the bolt is scribed “878”.

Barrel Length: 24″

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a beaded blade dovetailed to a hooded, serrated, ramped base which is screwed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight is a folding “U”-notch fine-adjustable for elevation and windage in a base fixed to the rear of the barrel. The top of the receiver is drilled and tapped with two-piece bases and rings holding a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x36mm scope with duplex reticle, SN 242130W. The scope’s glass is clear and the body shows only light handling marks, in Excellent condition. The left-rear of the receiver is drilled, tapped and filled to accept a peep-sight, but the stock is not relieved for this.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is checkered walnut with black forend tip and grip cap with white spacers, monte-carlo comb with cheekpiece, solid black rubber Decelerator buttpad and sling studs front and rear. The stock has a light nick on the bottom edge of the cheekpiece, another below the ejection port, and a few other minor handling marks. The checkering is sharp. There are no chips or cracks. The LOP measures 13 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the recoil pad, 12 1/4″ to the back of the wood. The pad has shaping wear around the edges, otherwise showing little wear, in about Very Good-plus condition. The stock rates in about Fine-Excellent overall condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its metal finish. The bolt has very light operational wear and there are a few scattered light marks in the floorplate and trigger guard. Otherwise, there are only light handling marks. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this rifle rates in about Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. There is a safety mounted on the right side of the receiver. Pushed forwards, the safety is OFF. If pulled back all the way, it locks both the bolt and the trigger. If pulled back half-way, it blocks only the trigger. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: This is a Winchester Model 70 Magnum made in 1981 and chambered in the .375 Holland & Holland Magnum cartridge. The rifle is in Excellent condition with about 98% of its finish, a beautiful stock with only a few light marks and a great bore. The .375 H&H is a belted magnum cartridge suitable for North American big game animals and even some of the thinner skinned game animals of Africa. This is a beautiful rifle in a great hunting cartridge that comes with a nice Leupold scope, ready to bag some game. Please see our photos and good luck!
