Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 94 AE XTR chambered in 7-30 Waters is a unique and relatively uncommon variation of the classic Winchester lever-action rifle, specifically tailored to appeal to hunters seeking flatter trajectories and improved long-range performance compared to traditional lever-action cartridges. The “AE” denotes Angle Eject, a design enhancement introduced by Winchester in the early 1980s to allow mounting of optics directly over the receiver. “XTR” indicates Winchester’s premium finish and features, typically including upgraded wood, checkering, polished blue metal surfaces, and enhanced overall fit and finish.

The 7-30 Waters cartridge itself was developed by Ken Waters in the mid-1980s by necking down the .30-30 Winchester case to accept a 7mm (.284) bullet. This provides increased velocity, improved accuracy, and superior ballistic performance, making it an excellent choice for deer-sized game, especially at extended lever-action ranges. When combined with the Angle Eject feature and scoped optics, the Model 94 AE XTR in 7-30 Waters becomes a surprisingly versatile lever-action rifle, effective at ranges that would typically challenge traditional cartridges like the .30-30.

For collectors, shooters, and lever-action enthusiasts, this Model 94 variant offers both functional appeal and collectible desirability. Its unique cartridge, combined with premium Winchester craftsmanship, makes it a sought-after firearm, capable of fulfilling dual roles as both a practical hunting rifle and a distinctive addition to any Winchester collection.  Please see our photos and good luck! – L.S.
